From March 20 to June 8 2025

Exhibition organized by Fundación MAPFRE in collaboration with the Municipal Foundation for Culture, Education, and the Popular University of Gijón/Xixón

This exhibition constitutes the largest retrospective to date of the American photographer Louis Stettner (1922–2016). His conception of photography as an instrument of social change offers a vibrant celebration of life, of the courage of human beings to fully confront the adversities and benefits of existence.

Stettner’s work encompasses a multitude of subjects, from almost empty urban environments to bustling scenes of the New York subway, the routine of workers and laborers, and the mountainous landscapes of the Alpilles. Throughout his career, he frequently returned to many of these subjects, especially those related to his social commitment and concern for the less fortunate.
